Choices & Changes: Motivating Healthy Behaviours
is a workshop on the role of provider-patient interaction that leads the health behaviour change process. Created by the Institute of Healthcare Communications, the research based content includes assessment techniques and motivational conversation skills.

The 4.5 hour free workshop will cover topics ranging from understanding motivation, utilizing open-ended inquiry and reflective listening, the conviction and confidence models, the patient/client environment, intervention, elements of the visit, and supporting self-management. Presentations, interactive exercises, videotaped case studies, and skills practice sessions will provide the participants with the skills needed to return to their work environment and promote health behaviour change.

The workshop is accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for 4.5 Mainpro-M1 credits. These credits also apply to other health care colleges. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
  • Identify beliefs around the importance of changing behaviour
  • Assess patient/client conviction and confidence to make change
  • Demonstrate techniques to use in clinical settings to influence change

If you are a healthcare provider or work in a healthcare setting, and are located within the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network (Barrie, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Midland, Muskoka, Orillia areas and anywhere in between) you have 2 options for participating in a Choices and Changes workshop.

  1. Participate in one of our 'open' workshops facilitated out of the South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre - these workshops typically take place in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, but with enough interest we can bring them to your community.
  2. Bring the workshop to your organization. If your organization has a group of staff members (from administrative staff, management, registered nurses or nurse practitioners, social workers, physicians, medical/nursing students, other students, occupational therapists, nutritionists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, smoking cessation counsellors, etc.). We have facilitated this workshop for Health Units, Community Health Centres, Family Health Teams, hospitals, educational environments and more. This workshop is beneficial for ANYONE involved in healthcare and health promotion.
From the Workbook provided to Choices and Changes participants:

Clinicians frequently express frustration about their capacity to influence patient/client behaviour, especially when they see the negative impact of that behaviour on their patient/clients’ health outcomes. A patient/client’s difficulty giving up smoking, following a diet, or sticking to a treatment plan often creates frustrations for both the clinician and the patient/client. Yet most clinicians realize that patient/client behaviour change and adherence to treatment is essential to producing positive health outcomes, especially in the context of chronic illness. In an effort to better equip clinicians to influence patient/clients’ health behaviours, the Institute developed the Choices and Changes program.

This workshop is based on theories of education, communication, the Stages of Change Model, Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Efficacy Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Motivational Interviewing, and the Conviction and Confidence Model. Participants learn specific strategies and skills to apply these models in the setting of brief clinical visits.
